A Dig Milestone for Richard Montgomery Volleyball and Clarksburg Flag Football Continues Dominance!

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The Richard Montgomery Rockets completed a 3-0 sweep of the Clarksburg Coyotes on Thursday, improving to 3-0 against Montgomery County opponents on the season. Senior libero Ana Djordjevic reached an impressive career milestone during the match, reaching 500 career digs in the victory.

Another impressive victory came from the Winston Churchill Bulldogs, who improved to 3-1 in their first five set match of the season, taking down the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons. This completed a 2-0 week for the Bulldogs, as they also beat the Kennedy Cavaliers 3-0.

There were a few other matches that went the full five sets. Those included Einstein over Blair, Clarksburg over Damascus, Blair over Magruder and Northwest over Poolesville.

For Blair, they played both games within a three-day span from 9/15-9/17 and will do the same this upcoming week from 9/22-9/24 as they take on Kennedy and Wheaton. Wheaton is in a similar situation this upcoming week and will play two games in three days. Both are bound to be great games. They take on the Rockets on Tuesday before Thursday’s tilt with the Blazers.

FIELD HOCKEY

The top two teams in the county, Rockville and Walt Whitman went a combined 4-0 this past week. For the Rams, they defeated Kennedy 8-0 before also taking down Magruder by the same score, 8-0. For the Vikings, it was first a 9-0 win over Einstein before an 8-0 win over Damascus.

Wootton isn’t too far behind those two squads and also went 2-0 this past week. A 9-0 victory over Northwood came first, followed by a narrow 3-2 win, taking down Seneca Valley.

BOYS SOCCER

Clarksburg continued their strong start to the season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Damascus. They have started their season winning all four matches by a combined score of 14-3, including back-to-back shut out victories over Watkins Mill and now Damascus. The Coyotes will play two games in three days as they take on Northwest and Poolesville this week.

The Sherwood Warriors defeated Paint Branch 2-1 in an upset. The Panthers were undefeated entering this game, but the Warriors took them down and reduced the number of teams undefeated in conference play to just four. Those being Clarksburg, Winston Churchill, Gaithersburg and Walt Whitman.

Churchill took down both Quince Orchard and Bethesda-Chevy Chase this past week by final scores of 4-3 and 2-1 respectively.

Gaithersburg has played just two matches in conference, but won them both. They emerged victorious over Watkins Mill 3-0 and Blake 3-2.

Walt Whitman has also yet to lose in conference play, but they finished their game against Walter Johnson at a nil-nil tie, which brings their record to 1-0-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

Across the board, girls soccer had a great week. Sherwood took home a two victory week by beating Springbrook 9-1 on Tuesday and then shut out Paint Branch in an 8-0 rout. The Warriors improved to 3-1 on the year. When they win, they win big, highlighted by a 24-2 combined final score across their wins.

Some other notable matchups included the first place Walter Johnson Wildcats improved to 4-0 on the season by beating Quince Orchard 3-0 on Wednesday and Magruder taking down Gaithersburg one-nil.

Poolesville also captured a big victory, taking down Northwest 3-0 to remain undefeated.

FLAG FOOTBALL

Clarksburg continued their dominance with a 2-0 week, including their second win by 40+ points through just four games. The first win was a 39-12 win over Quince Orchard, before shutting out Watkins Mill 47-0. Those victories improved their average point differential to 35.8 points, best in the county. They are outscoring their opponents 161-18 on the year. That number is well on their way to besting their 350-64 mark from a season ago.

Poolesville went 2-0 on the week. They shutout Northwest 28-0, and followed that win up with a victory over Damascus 19-12 to improve to 4-0.

One game to keep an eye on this week is Watkins Mills vs Damascus on Wednesday night. Both the Wolverines and the Swarmin’ Hornets are looking to get back on track following their respective losses to Clarksburg and Poolesville and sit right next to each other in the standings.
