A Look Around MCPS Following Week Two Of Action!

Week two of the fall sports season is in the books. Let’s take a look around Montgomery County and see how the week unfolded.
FOOTBALL
It was an evening of dominance across the board in Montgomery County on Thursday night. There were five games played which resulted in shutout victories of 40 or more points.
Quince Orchard improved to 2-0 on the season as they crushed Walter Johnson 68-0. They scored 40+ points before the halftime break and cruised to victory. One week after getting shutout themselves by the Cougars, Paint Branch rebounded in a huge way, taking down Einstein 59-0. Gaithersburg improved to 1-1 on the season, shutting down Northwood in a 41-0 win. Wheaton did the same in their matchup vs Springbrook, winning 56-0, and Poolesville took care of Rockville in a 46-0 dominant win.
BOYS SOCCER
Four teams remain undefeated through week two’s action. Seneca Valley, Paint Branch, Clarksburg and Quince Orchard. All four squads won close matchups to improve to 2-0. The Screaming Eagles beat JFK 4-3, the Panthers won 4-2 over Northwood, the Coyotes took down Blair 3-1 and the Cougars beat Northwest 4-3.
While Bethesda Chevy Chase, Gaithersburg, Wootton, James Blake and Winston Churchill are all still undefeated, they have yet to play a second match vs a MoCo opponent.
Walt Whitman has played three games and are 1-2 through them, but none of those matchups were against MCPS schools. Their first conference game is Monday September 14th at Walter Johnson.
GIRLS SOCCER
Similar to boys soccer, not every team has played their second conference matchup. However, some front runners are still emerging early on. Blair’s two wins were extremely convincing as they crushed both Clarksburg and Blake 6-0 and 8-0 respectively. The Quince Orchard Cougars are also emerging as a top contender following a pair of shutout wins over Wheaton and Northwest. And while they have only played one game so far, look out for the Barons of Bethesda Chevy Chase. My preseason number one ranked team also shutout Northwest and takes on Wootton on Monday.
Similar to the boys team, Walt Whitman’s first conference matchup is on Monday vs Walter Johnson.
FIELD HOCKEY
Damascus is coming off of a busy week, playing two games; one out of conference which they dropped, but they get a breather ahead of their next matchup against Walt Whitman. Northwest had the most dominant win of the past week, completing an 8-0 shutout of Gaithersburg.
A couple of matchups to look out for next week both take place Tuesday night. Seneca Valley goes for their third victory as they take on Quince Orchard and Walter Johnson looks to remain undefeated as they take on Sherwood.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Poolesville has been dominant in the early going, having lost just four sets across three games. Einstein did take them to a fifth and final set, but ultimately couldn’t close the deal. The Titans have played five sets in both of their games thus far and look to take down Walter Johnson on Monday.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Preseason favorite Clarksburg has jumped out early with a pair of crushing victories. They took down Walt Whitman and Winston Churchill 35-6 and 40-0 respectively with just three days in-between games. Their next game is Tuesday vs a Quince Orchard squad looking to upset the Coyote powerhouse.
One matchup I’m looking at this upcoming week is Blake’s matchup on the road vs Springbrook. Both squads are undefeated and each have a close win and a convincing one. It will be interesting to see what direction this matchup goes.
CROSS COUNTRY
It’s running season in MoCo! Be sure to check out the action at some of the upcoming meets. I’m keeping my eye on the tri-meet between Quince Orchard, Damascus and Springbrook. The Cougars are playing host for this exciting meet.
PICKLEBALL
Montgomery County is entering year three of pickleball! The season kicks off this week with a plethora of matchups across the county. Take a look at this week’s schedule below and be sure to watch and cheer your team on!
