Last week, XPosure Sports hosted their annual high school baseball spring break showcase, drawing 40 teams from Maryland and D.C. for the four day event. Six Montgomery County teams participated in this prestigious tournament playing in twelve total games. Click this link or scroll down for a full recap on how each team performed! Stay tuned for next week for full standings updates as these games do not apply to league records.

Montgomery County might not have classes in session this week, but that isn’t keeping it’s baseball teams off the diamond. This past week, six MCPS teams competed in the XPosure tournament at Blandair Park in Columbia, facing top tier talent from across the state. Here’s how the six teams that made the trip competed:
Bethesda-Chevy Chase: The Barons played on Tuesday, the first day of the showcase, and faced Reservoir and Marriotts Ridge as the away team. They kicked off their day in the 11 a.m. slot against the Mustangs. Left fielder Nick Mencher had a strong day at the plate, picking up two hits in two at-bats plus two walks and a run scored. George Cropp threw 5.2 innings, giving up eight hits and one earned run, but he also picked up eight strikeouts en route to a 4-3 win. In the late afternoon, B-CC took on the Gators, and despite giving up a run in the first, put for on the scoreboard in the third inning. Shortstop Noah Hecht went 1/2 with two RBIs and two walks on the way to a 7-1 victory, locking down the sweep.
Damascus: The Hornets were the second of three MCPS teams to play their two games on Tuesday as they played host to Reservoir before serving as the away team against Howard. Their game against the Gators was the other in the 11 a.m. slot, but it didn’t end the way head coach Patrick Skellchock’s team was hoping. Shane Cooperstein started the game on the mound, giving up seven hits and five earned runs across 3.2 innings. He was relieved by CJ Holland who gave up five unearned runs as Damascus fell 10-0, recording just two hits in the five inning run rule loss. The loss was immediately followed up a dominant performance against the Howard Lions. Thoams Malouf threw 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs, meanwhile twelve of the fifteen hitters to reach scored, giving the green and yellow a strong 12-0 win in six innings.
Walter Johnson: The Wildcats played in Tuesday’s evening slate, facing the Chesapeake Cougars from Anne Arundel County and the Centennial Eagles from Howard. In game one as the away team against the Cougars, Eureka commit Evan Retzlaff gave up five runs before being relieved by Gavin Bennett, who gave up another eight over 1.2 innings. The Wildcats scored just one run on two hits in their 13-1 run rule loss. In their second game, WJ took an early 1-0 lead on a wild pitch, but then gave up three in the top of the second. Starting pitcher Logan Rayment-Cruz was not shaken, as he finished the game throwing six complete innings without allowing just one hit in the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the offense gradually came back, eventually tying the game in the sixth on a sacrifice flyout from Jack Gilder. However, no extra innings would be played and the contest ended in a 3-3 tie.
Blair: The Blazers were the only Montgomery County team competing early Wednesday afternoon, as they hosted the Towson Generals before facing Northern Calvert as the away team. They opened their day at 2 p.m. against the Generals, but gave up six runs in just the first 1.2 innings. That lead grew to as much as 11, but the Blazers put a seven-spot on the board in the fourth to bring them back to a 14-10 deficit. Four more Towson runs and a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth would finish an 18-10 loss that saw six Blair errors in five innings. Their second game against Northern Calvert was cut short after just two and a half innings, but the short stretch was highlighted by a five-run first inning that saw a Rab Sharp double and four singles. Ryan Kelting gave up no hits in the seven batters he faced across the two innings, as his team took a 5-0 win.
Sherwood: The Warriors were scheduled to play two games on Wednesday evening, first against the Parkside Rams followed by an under-the-lights game against Towson, but just the first game was played according to the team’s GameChanger. Facing off against the reigning 2A state runnerup post early challenges for Sherwood’s squad, as they found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning and a half, but the next three innings were dominated by the Warriors. An Ayden Jenkins triple along with three RBI and two singles from Calum Jagannathan propelled Sherwood to a 7-2 win in just five innings.
Magruder: The Colonels were the final MCPS team to compete in the tournament as they faced two Baltimore County teams on Thursday morning, Sparrows Point and Pikesville. Game one against Sparrows was an offensive obliteration that saw 14 runs scored in four innings. Colin McCullough’s home run along with four triples led the offense, while four members of the pitching staff held the Pointers to just one hit as Magruder won game one 14-0. They continued the strong performance at the plate against the Panthers, as the Colonels put eight runs on the board in the first inning alone. Eight walks thrown by Pikesville’s Nate Cherry prompted his removal before the first inning ended, and later in the game, a Matt Strahan homer, a Colin McCullough triple, and four total bases for Josh Holland led Magruder to a 17-2 win, capping off a 31-2 combined performance over their two games.

BOYS LACROSSE 🥍
Just five total games were played by Montgomery County boys lacrosse teams over spring break. Click this link or scroll down for recaps on all five! Stay tuned for next week for full standings updates, or for the latest, click here!

Spring break is a time for all students to take time off school, but for a few Montgomery County boys’ lacrosse programs, their time is spent on the field, practicing and playing in scrimmages. In the last week, six MCPS teams have competed in five games, using the break as time to sharpen their skills before the regular season gets back underway this week. Here are how those four games went, including how both the MoCo teams and their opponents fared:
Wheaton @ Wootton: The first game got underway early on Monday, as the winless Knights traveled to face the undefeated Patriots in search of their first win of the season. Unfortunately for Wheaton, they would remain winless as Wootton picked up their first dominant win of the season, earning a 14-0 victory. They were led by Ryne White, who contributed eight total points including six goals. Wheaton, now 0-4, will try to get in the win column upon the return from break as they’ll face the 2-1-1 Blair Blazers.
Gaithersburg @ Wootton: The Patriots’ spring schedule was not done yet as they played their second game Monday against the Trojans. While no Gaithersburg stats have been reported, Wootton sophomore Landric Mounce had a dominant performance, leading his team in points with nine, followed by Blake Williams with six. Benedict Santos gave up four goals to Gaithersburg en route to a 17-4 victory for the Patriots. Now undefeated during the break, Danny Phillips and company will have time to prepare to face an undefeated Quince Orchard squad on Tuesday, while the Trojans, now 3-1, also have a one-loss team next on their schedule, as they’ll face Sherwood this Wednesday.
Huntingtown @ Sherwood: The Hurricanes made the trip into central Maryland on Monday to take on the Warriors. After finding the net a combined 35 times in their last two games, the Sherwood offense could only put three on the scoreboard, scored by Chase Althouse, Carson Chirichella, and Daniel Walsh. The Warriors’ defense have them a strong performance, including 23 ground balls, led by seven from Tommy Hanrahan and six from Althouse, but it would not be enough as they fell 5-3 in their first game of the day.
Northeast (AA) @ Sherwood: After a tough loss earlier in the day, the Warriors had a good chance to bounce back in their second game of the day against the Northeast Eagles. Sherwood was again led by junior midfielder Chase Althouse, who contributed four goals and an assist on six shots on goal while adding seven ground balls on defense. Vaughn Teeter also had five total points while goalie Stephen Northern excelled on defense, allowing just six goals while saving 13 shots on goal. In the end, the Warriors split their spring break games, taking game two from the Eagles 13-6.
Century @ Bethesda-CC: The Knights came into Montgomery County looking to hand the Barons their first loss of the season. While there are no stats available for this game, Century did exactly what they came to do, winning a 16-3 rout in Bethesda. B-CC will look to bounce back against Walter Johnson on Tuesday
