BASEBALL ⚾
Sherwood won their fifth state championship victory in six years! The Warriors faced top-seeded Stephen Decatur at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen on Monday afternoon. After giving up a run in the bottom of the first, Sherwood battled to upset the Seahawks 3-2. Click the video below to see the final play that sealed the state championship win. TENNIS 🎾
Montgomery County crowned seven state tennis champions throughout the weekend! Neela Wadhwa won the 4A girls’ singles title in a walkover victory over Blair’s Grace Shao. Ellen Bu and Jiajing Zheng from Richard Montgomery lost to Broadneck’s girls’ doubles pair 6-2 and 6-4 in the 4A championship, but Wootton’s Emma Ikeda and Veronica Chunikhin won the 3A title, defeating Severna Park’s pair 6-1 and 6-2.
Churchill’s Thomas Gjoklaj gave up just one point in the 4A boys’ singles state championship, defeating Urbana’s Eli Kim 6-0 and 6-1 to win the title. Poolesville’s Andy Wu won the 2A boys’ singles bracket, defeating Hereford’s Harry Smith 6-2 and 6-2. Wootton’s Anthony Hall also made the boys’ singles title game in the 3A bracket, but fell to Channing Clarke from Reservoir 6-3 and 7-6.
Kevin Nguyen and Eric Ma from Blair along with William Chen and Akshaj Mareddy from Poolesville won the boys’ 4A and 2A doubles titles. The Blazers pair beat Urbana’s duo 7-6 (6) and 7-6 (2), while the Falcons beat Howard 6-1 and 6-3. The lone MoCo mixed doubles pair to make the state championship was Griffin Chen and Lorena Peranovic from Quince Orchard. The QO duo defeated top-seeded Broadneck in three sets, winning 6-1, losing 1-6, then securing the win 1-0 (8).
