Last season, the Whitman Vikings boys lacrosse team reached the 4A state semifinals, and after losing 17 members of that roster, this year’s squad looks to make another playoff run. In 2025, the Whitman Vikings boys’ lacrosse program was one of the final four 4A teams alive, as they reached the state semifinals before falling 12-7 to the future state champions, Urbana. Now at the beginning of the 2026 season, this year’s roster will be without an MCPS-high 17 members of the team who were just two wins away from winning it all.

The double-digit losses include captains Mark Buckley, Ben Ersek, and Drew Delano, the latter of the three has contributed more than 200 points, including 100 goals, in his time at Whitman. Head coach Andrew Roswell said that his focus, along with his assistant coaches, was to continue to grow day-by-day.

“In the offseason, we are all trying to get better as coaches, just like the players are trying to get better,” Roswell said. “The big focus is on developing leadership among the players so that the guys are ready to run with it when the season rolls around.”

When February 28 arrived and official practices began, Coach Roswell and his staff were ready to get the season underway. “The feeling is always one of excitement… we are just trying to stack good days where we are getting better.”

To get better, Coach Roswell would have half of last year’s team, about 20 athletes, ready to work while helping to improve a group of younger athletes. The team will be led by Stevenson Commit Sean Sanders, who was selected to the first all-county team last season, LSM Tommy Sullivan who made the second team, and Denison University commit Carter Lowe on offense.

After coming out with a 19-1 win in their season opener against Richard Montgomery, Coach Roswell was happy, but explained that he and his team doesn’t think about the game they just finished for long. “We have a 12 hour rule where the mindset immediately shifts to the next task, whether it is practice or the next opponent,” he said. The next task, which was a Monday road match against Northwest, was just as dominant, as the Vikings took down the Jaguars 20-1.

However, after a strong first two games, Whitman’s next match would be a rematch against Urbana, where they fell 14-4. Coach Roswell emphasized that his team did get their medicine in a Saturday match against Northeast, where they won 14-8. Throughout the week off, Whitman’s team will be working on continuing to win the offensive ground game, but Coach Roswell specifically will focus on improving athletes’ mentality and focus heading into their next game on Wednesday against Huntingtown.

"I’m extremely excited about the group of guys we have this season," senior Sean Sanders mentioned. "If we trust in the brotherhood and play for the people beside us, we will be successful and do great things." After four games, Sanders leads his team with 21 total points while Tommy Gardiner had 13 shots on goal which puts him at the top of the roster.

BASEBALL ⚾

After a full week of the regular season, Walter Johnson holds the county’s top spot with a 5-0 record, also earning them the No. 1 position on the Xposure Sports 4A public school power rankings. The Wildcats are closely followed by the 4-0 Blake Bengals and the 3-0 Springbrook Blue Devils, the only other remaining undefeated teams in the county.

After dropping their first game of the season on the road against Century, last year’s 3A state champions, the Sherwood Warriors, picked up three straight wins last week outscoring Whitman, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, and Poolesville 35-4 in their three games of the week. They’ll stay out of the county on Monday and Tuesday as the Warriors will face Glenelg (Howard Co.) and Archbishop Curley (MIAA) before returning to MCPS action against Damascus on April 7.

Several teams last week had extreme offensive success, with ten games being decided by over 15 runs, including four decided by 25 runs. Northwest’s Wednesday match against Kennedy takes the crown for the biggest differential of the week, with that final score being 27-0, but Northwood scored the most in a single game, as they scored 29 runs in their game Friday. The Jaguars followed up Wednesday’s rout with the county’s closest game of the week, as they hosted Quince Orchard, winning 11-10.

Despite spring break starting this week, there will be no shortage of MoCo baseball, with 20 games on the calendar for this Monday! Stay tuned to CSZ for results.

SOFTBALL 🥎

Of all spring sports, Softball has the most remaining undefeated teams in Montgomery County. Sherwood and Quince Orchard lead the way, both holding 4-0 records, followed by Northwest at 3-0 and Walter Johnson, Magruder, and Clarksburg at 2-0. Either Magruder or Quince Orchard will be removed from next week’s list, as the two are set to faceoff on Monday in a spring break match.

Last week, 23 games in Montgomery County were decided by double-digit runs, including 11 decided by at least 15 and four more decided by at least 20. Northwest’s Tuesday game against Churchill proved to be the biggest blowout of the week, with the Jaguars handling the Bulldogs 25-0. The most points scored in a game was not 25, in fact that wasn’t top three. Springbrook took that crown this week as they plated 30 in their match against Watkins Mill.

The game of the week saw 52 total runs come across to score, as Seneca Valley beat Northwood on Monday by a 27-25 final score. Einstein and Paint Branch played in the closest game of the week, with the Titans taking down the Panthers 14-13 in Thursday.

With spring break taking up the next week, just four teams, Damascus, Quince Orchard, Blair, and Magruder, have action on their schedule. Stay tuned for the results from all four teams from the time off the regular action.

GIRLS LACROSSE 🥍

After the first full week of spring sports, Sherwood has taken the top spot in Montgomery County for girls’ lacrosse at 3-0, closely followed by Wootton and Wheaton who both sit at 2-0. In league standings, the Blair Blazers are currently 2-0 (2-2 overall) following a 14-12 Wednesday win over Einstein and a 14-0 victory on Friday over Kennedy.

Friday was the week’s biggest day, with the closest game and the highest scoring game of the week. Seneca Valley hosted Watkins Mill, where the Screamin’ Eagles won the game with 27 total goals scored. The closest game of the week goes to Friday’s match between Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Churchill, where the Bulldogs earned their second win of the season 6-5, handing the Barons their first loss.

The big story of last week was the dominance that multiple MoCo teams showed. Since Monday, March 23, 14 games were decided by double digit goals, with an additional six being decided by 15 or more. The blowouts are led by Richard Montgomery who, after falling 23-2 to Whitman last Friday, took down Springbrook 16-2 on Tuesday, followed by a 22-point victory on the road against Kennedy on Thursday. They’ll look to continue their dominance this week, but it will be tough to do as they face 2-0 Wheaton in their next match on April 7.
