SOFTBALL 🥎

Sherwood and Northwest remain undefeated halfway through April, but Sherwood takes the top spot having played two more games. Northwest stayed undefeated in one of last week’s games of the week. Click this link or scroll down to read more about the top four MCPS Softball games of last week!

Northwest: 14, Quince Orchard: 3

Quince Orchard had one out with the bases loaded in the top of the first, coming on two walks and a single, but failed to plate any runs. Two walks, a single, and a hit by pitch for the Jaguars gave them a 1-0 lead after one. That lead would extend three in their next inning, coming on an RBI triple from Julia Clark and an RBI single from Ali Porter. The two continued to tack on more runs in the bottom of the third, with Julia Clark driving in one on a double before Ali Porter smashed a three-run shot on a line drive to center field, putting the Jaguars ahead by eight. The Cougars had two leadoff baserunners in the fourth, but two strikeouts and a lineout later, both were stranded. However, they did erase the zero from the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, as Adri Marzullo doubled and later scored on an error. Then with two outs, Kalya Stoklosa singled into left field, plating Lea Pastrick and Sydney Richardson. But just as the Cougars were clawing their way back, the first six Jaguars reached and scored in the bottom of the fifth, before a Debbie Devasahayam line drive walk off double ended the game in a 14-3 run rule final.

Sherwood: 6, Walter Johnson: 5

The Wildcats got off to a 2-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the first, coming on an RBI single from Ella Reynolds before she scored on a wild pitch just two hitters later. The Warriors did answer in the bottom frame, as following three straight singles, Kylie Valois sent a double into center field scoring two. They would take their first lead of the game in the second with back-to-back RBI singles by Savannah Markwood and Reagan Corb. Down 4-2, The Wildcats responded in the top of the third with a sac fly from Alina Bonoir before Quinn Reynolds scored on a passed ball. The game’s next runs didn’t come until the button of the fifth, where the Warriors’ Emerson Long drove in Mia Bruno on a hard ground ball that led to an error. With their backs to the wall, Bonoir took the third pitch of her seventh-inning at bat over the center field fence to tie the game at five, forcing extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Elly Ylawa walked the game off for Sherwood on a line drive single, ending the game and keeping Sherwood atop the MCPS standings.

Blair: 10, Einstein: 4

An early lead was taken by Blair just five pitches into the game following a Kendra Gray single and an infield error in the next at bat. The Titans were quick to strike back with Lorelei Scope walking to lead off the inning before eventually scoring. The Blazers did retake the lead in the second. After two leadoff walks, Eleanor Hatton drove in a run on a sacrifice groundout before Vivian Lu plated another with a base hit. It took until the fifth for them to score any more, but they offense ignited in a big way. Mia Escobar, Alice Levings, and Grace Rawlings each had RBI base hits while another scored on an Maddy Elazar sacrifice groundout, giving Blair a seven-run lead. Marison Arroyo did put one more on the board for the Titans in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout, but Escobar drove in another on an RBI triple in the sixth, later scoring. Einstein tried to come back in the bottom of the seven with runs scored by Natalia Day and Aubrey F, but it was not enough, as they fell 10-4.

Seneca Valley: 29, Watkins Mill: 8

The Screaming Eagles’ offense had one of the best performances of the season in Saturday’s game against Watkins Mill. The offensive onslaught was enabled by nine first inning walks allowed by the Wolverines while just two hits were recorded. Their offense did look to respond in the bottom half with four singles and a double amassing four total runs. However, in the top of the second, an Ava Alston-Simonse triple and a Maggie Harrison homer along with seven more base runners extended the Seneca Valley lead to 17-4. Watkins Mill saw two runners cross the plate in the bottom of the second, but the Eagles six of their own score in the top of the third, including Maggie Harrison second home run of the game, this one an inside-the-park homer, and four consecutive singles later in the inning. Alice Appleh tripled at the beginning of Watkins Mill’s half of the third, before going on to score to make the score 23-8. SV scored four more in the fourth before Maggie Harrison second inside-the-park homer of the game, her third overall. In the end, the Screaming Eagles offense soared to a massive road win over Watkins Mill with a 29-8 final.

GIRLS LACROSSE 🥍

Last week had several incredible games, including Richard Montgomery’s 18-3 win over Wheaton, Poolesville’s battle to beat Northwest, and two games on Thursday decided by just one goal! Heading into mid-April, MoCo has just one undefeated team left, with Sherwood sitting at 5-0. They are closely trained by Quince Orchard and Magruder, both of the two are half of a game back. Click this link or read below for what could be the best games of this coming week!

Monday: Walter Johnson @ Whitman

Two teams that were eliminated in the regional playoffs will face off to kick off the county’s weekly schedule. Last year’s regular season match resulted in an 11-7 Wildcat win, but the Vikings got their revenge, eliminating WJ 9-5 in the regional semifinals. Despite losing 11 seniors from the 2025 squad, Whitman has gotten out to a strong 4-2 start, including a 10 point win over Northwest and a 21 goal victory against Richard Montgomery. They’ll face a 3-2 Walter Johnson squad who was just one goal away from riding in on a four-game win streak, as they fell to the Wootton Patriots 10-9 last Thursday.

Tuesday: Blake @ Springbrook

Both the Bengals and the Blue Devils have had rough starts to the season, as the two have 1-4 and 2-3 records, respectively. Blake’s lone win came right before spring break on the road against Gaithersburg. In their two games since, they’ve been outscored 32-4. Springbrook’s victories were against Northwood and Paint Branch, but their losses have been by an astounding 44-3 margin. With both teams not losing overwhelming amounts of seniors, six for Blake and just four for the Blue Devils, the returning athletes on both sides will look to reroute their team’s seasons in search of a much needed win.

Wednesday: Magruder @ Sherwood

Two premiere Montgomery County teams will match up in the midweek, with the 5-1 Colonels set to play the undefeated Warriors this Wednesday. Magruder’s lone loss was on the road against Wootton, but they have put double-digits on the board in each of their five wins on the year. Sherwood, who sits atop the county standings, hasn’t come close to a loss this season, with their smallest win margin sitting at 13 while the defense has allowed just one goal in their five games. Head coach Kelly Hughes has five juniors on this year’s team committed to play collegiately who will give a tough time to Magruder’s Serafina Sager, a junior midfielder committed to Rochester, along with the rest of the team this Wednesday.

Thursday: Richard Montgomery @ Rockville

The Rams opened their season with a close loss on the road against Magruder and a tough defeat against Wootton. Since then, they find themselves one goal away from a three-game win streak heading into the week, with dominant wins over Northwood and Kennedy. On the other side of the field, the Rockets lost by over 20 to Whitman at the beginning of the year, but then went on a three game win streak, ended in a one goal loss at Blair on Saturday. Last year’s match between Richard Montgomery and Rockville ended in a 13-9 RM home win, but with both teams heating up in the midseason, this game will almost certainly be an entertainer.

Friday: Quince Orchard @ Bethesda-Chevy Chase

Quince Orchard swept the season series last spring, taking down the Barons 13-7 in late March, then 10-9 in the playoffs on the way to a state. This year, the Cougars enter with a 5-1 record, with the lone loss being a three goal defeat on the road against Walter Johnson. Meanwhile, B-CC has had a much stronger start to their campaign than their record suggests. The Barons’ two losses came by a combined three goals to Walter Johnson and Churchill, but those two were followed by a narrow home win against Whitman. 2025 first team all-division selectees Lindsay Solomon and Addison Foise will look to lead Bethesda-CC to their first win over QO in over a decade.

BOYS LACROSSE 🥍

Quince Orchard sits atop the Boys’ Lacrosse standings as the only undefeated team remaining in MCPS. The Cougars will open their week with a road match in Anne Arundel County against Crofton, while Sherwood and Whitman will play Paint Branch and Walter Johnson respectively. With just half of a game on second place and one game above third, there is plenty of time left this season for more changes to the standings!

BASEBALL âšľ

Walter Johnson’s tie over spring break against Centennial has them sitting at 9-2-1, which leads Montgomery County. Magruder and Sherwood are both just half a game back. The Colonels had a strong week, taking down the Wildcats 3-2 on Thursday, which was one of three wins they had last week. Meanwhile, the Warriors went 2-1 last week, falling to Damascus before beating Quince Orchard and Springbrook by a jaw dropping 61-6. (25-5 @ Quince Orchard, 36-1 @ Springbrook).
