BOYS LACROSSE 🥍
Last Friday saw the game of the year between two of the top Boys Lacrosse teams MCPS has to offer, Sherwood and Whitman. Click this link or scroll down to read a full recap on how the contest went!

On Friday evening, the 10-1 Sherwood Warriors traveled into Bethesda to face the 8-2 Whitman Vikings in a high-stakes rivalry faceoff. The Vikings enter on a six-game win streak, most recently taking down the Wheaton Knights 19-1 on the road on Tuesday. Meanwhile the Warriors enter as the top team in the county, not having lost a game since spring break and recently defeating Quince Orchard 18-7 at home.
Whitman opened the game controlling the ball heavily, keeping the offense within just a few yards of the goal for the first few minutes while getting off several shots. Sherwood responded with a trio of shots on goal over a 30 second window, but none got them on the board.
After some back and forth, the Warriors continued to control the offensive pace, leading to Vaughn Teeter scoring the first goal of the game just over halfway through the first. Less than three minutes later, Carter Lowe put the Vikings on the board from 25 yards out. Sherwood’s Daniel Walsh did give his team a one-point lead with a minute to go in the first, and the quarter ended 2-1.
It took 5:43 for either team to score in the second quarter, but it was Sherwood’s Chase Althouse who put his team up 3-1, and with just one second left in the half, Althouse found the back of the net again for his second goal of the quarter.
Sherwood controlled the game for the first third of the third, but the Viks got their opportunity on a fast break, scoring for the first time since the first to make it a 4-2 game. Just a minute later, Sean Sanders had another breakaway that resulted in a goal, but that goal did come at the cost of a major hit temporarily sending him to the sidelines.
Cooper Serwer scored just a minute and a half later to give Sherwood their two-goal lead back, and it returned to three after another goal from Althouse. Carter Lowe scored his second of the game three minutes into the fourth, but a minute later, Serwer scored the Warriors’ seventh goal, and just six seconds later, he scored again to put Sherwood ahead 8-4.
The Warrior advantage grew to as much as five before the Whitman attack began to wake up. With under three minutes to go, Arkin Isip made it a four-point game, and with under a minute to go, Carter Lowe completed the hat trick, and with two seconds left, Zach Kendall-Taylor scored as well. While Whitman’s offense began to come back, it was too little too late as Sherwood won this rivalry match 9-7.

Sherwood also played in a top-tier baseball match earlier last week, as they hosted the Magruder Colonels. For a full recap on how Monday’s game played out, click this link or scroll down to read more!

On Monday, the Sherwood Warriors hosted the Magruder Colonels in a baseball match that could prove to have major county and statewide playoff implications. Sherwood, 11-2, entered on a five game win streak that saw a point differential of 125-11. Magruder, also 11-2, found themselves on a nine game win streak dating back to a road loss to Damascus before spring break.
Neither team got any offense going in the first two innings, with just one total hit being recorded on a Jaiden Sarita one-out double, but he was stranded after just two batters. In the top of the third, following a leadoff lineout, Nick Gardner, Jackson Branch, and Andrew Giacolone took singles into each part of the outfield. Clarion University commit Matt Strahan, the next batter, hit a grounder to short, but Gardner was able to score on a fielder's choice. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Sherwood pitcher Lee Gisriel picked off Strahan at first to end the inning, limiting Magruder’s damage.
Down by a run, the Warrior offense prepared to respond in their half of the third. Following back-to-back one-out hits, Gettysburg College commit Jacob Bender sent a double into left field driving in two to give Sherwood the lead. The double was followed by a walk and an infield error to lead the bases. Jaiden Sarita picked up his second hit of the say with a two-RBI single, followed by a Calum Jagannathan two-RBI double that put Sherwood ahead 6-1.
Keegan Blake led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, and two pitches later, scored on a wild pitch to extend the Warrior lead even more. It took the Colonel offense until the sixth inning to get going. Collin Giacolone smashed a line drive into center, plating Andrew Giacolone and Colin Mccullough. Magruder loaded the bases two batters later following a single and a walk, but all three runners were left stranded.
Jackson Branch led off the seventh with a walk, but he would be the last Colonel to reach base, as this game ended in favor of Sherwood 7-3. Lee Gisriel picked up the win for the Warriors. The senior threw 5.1 innings, giving up five hits and three runs while picking up two strikeouts on 71 pitches. Andrew Giacolone was tagged with the loss for Magruder after throwing 4.1 innings while allowing nine hits, six runs (another unearned) and two walks. Jaiden Sarita led the Warriors offensive effort, going 2/3 at the plate with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.

GIRLS LACROSSE 🥍'
Sherwood’s lead has grown to two games ahead of both Walter Johnson and Bethesda-CC. The Barons and the Warriors are set to face off in Bethesda this Friday in the last game of both of the two teams’ seasons. If Sherwood loses at home against Wootton on Tuesday and B-CC takes care of Rockville on the road this Wednesday, Friday’s game would decide who wins the county crown. If the Warriors win on Tuesday, the end-of-week match would only solidify an undefeated campaign from Sherwood, or it would break at the last possible second. Stay tuned for everything you need to know from this week!
