Week seven of the fall sports season is in the books. Let’s take a look around Montgomery County and see how the week unfolded.
FOOTBALL
There were three one-score final scores this week across Montgomery County.
First, Winston Churchill took home their second straight victory after defeating Seneca Valley in a 14-13 nail-biter. Their lone loss on the season remains their game vs, Quince Orchard.
Next, it was Bethesda-Chevy Chase, who took down Blake in another nail-biter finish, winning 20-19. The Barons improved to 5-2 on the season.
Finally, Gaithersburg won 21-19 over Richard Montgomery, who dropped to 1-6 in what has been a disappointing season for the Rockets. Their lone victory came against Wootton a week ago.
Another notable game from the past week was Paint Branch’s 41-6 win over Walt Whitman in a statement victory. The Panthers haven’t fully performed up to their preseason hype in 2026, but they are now on a four game winning streak and turning things in the right direction at the right time in the season.
Quince Orchard’s tilt with Clarksburg was postponed until Monday Oct. 19th at 6:30. Both teams will play twice this week, which should prove to be a huge test for not just the teams themselves, but especially all of the players on both squads.

FIELD HOCKEY
A few weeks ago, the Winston Churchill Bulldogs were sitting around sixth in the standings. Now, they are second. The reason? They had their schedule a little more backloaded than other teams. By not playing as many matches as other teams in the conference, they flew under the radar most of the season, but now are right up at the top and in contention for the number one seed.
They do have Walt Whitman as their prime contender for that spot. For the Bulldogs, their remaining schedule is Wheaton and Richard Montgomery. Wheaton is last in the Montgomery County standings, having yet to win a conference matchup. Richard Montgomery is a respectable 5-4, but Winston Churchill is a fearsome opponent.
For the Walt Whitman Vikings, they have one game remaining. It will take place on Thursday, Oct. 22 vs. Poolesville. The Falcons are on a three-game winning streak and go on the road in hopes of an upset win.
For the other teams up at the top, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Rockville, and Walter Johnson, they are all within one game of one another. The Barons play the Blair Blazers in a tough matchup, while Rockville takes on Sherwood and Walter Johnson plays Clarksburg. Based on season records, the Wildcats have the “easiest” game of the three, but none of these games are “easy” by any means. It is still truly anyone’s game for the third seed.

CROSS COUNTRY
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase took home the 2026 boys’ cross country championship, while on the girls’ side, it was Walt Whitman taking home the hardware. Congratulations to all athletes involved!
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Two teams have control over the MCPS girls’ volleyball standings. It’s the Sherwood Warriors and Richard Montgomery Rockets. The Warriors have dropped just two sets all season, while the Rockets sit at three sets lost in 2026. Each team has three regular-season games remaining, but none more important than their season finales. They will face each other on Oct. 28. What is easily going to be the biggest game of the season for both squads could be the deciding factor in who is the one seed entering the tournaments.
Wootton and Clarksburg are in a battle for third in the standings, with both sitting at 9-1. Wootton takes on Richard Montgomery, Magruder and Wheaton the rest of the way, while Clarksburg’s opponents are one greater. The Coyotes have four games remaining and they are against Paint Branch, Walter Johnson, Sherwood and Blair. Each of these teams in the battle for third has to face one of the teams in the battle for first down the stretch. It is shaping up to be an exciting final few weeks of MCPS volleyball.

BOYS SOCCER
Clarksburg remains on top of the standings with one week to go in the regular season, sitting at 9-2. A 2-1 win over Gaithersburg keeps them a game ahead of Winston Churchill. The Coyotes’ final regular season game is vs. Springbrook, while the Bulldogs have two matches left. They will face Seneca Valley and Blair in their final games of the season.
Paint Branch and Sherwood are right behind the top two and each have two games remaining this week. Depending on how the final week plays out, the top of the standings could look very different in just seven days.

GIRLS SOCCER
Montgomery Blair remains at the top of the standings with one week left to play, sitting at 9-0-1. Sherwood and Magruder are in second and third with perhaps momentum in their favor over the Blazers. Why? Because Blair tied 2-2 in their most recent match against the Barons of Bethesda-Chevy Chase. A tie rather than a win may not have exactly been the loss what the teams chasing Blair were hoping for, but it helps their cases. Blair’s remaining games are against Walt Whitman and Winston Churchill. That game vs. the Bulldogs could prove to be the difference as the season winds down.
The Bulldogs, in addition to their game vs the Blazers, also play Seneca Valley this week. For Magruder, they have just one game remaining and it is against Quince Orchard. For Sherwood, their remaining schedule is vs. Kennedy and Poolesville.

FLAG FOOTBALL
One week remains in the regular season for MCPS flag football and the standings leading Clarksburg cannot do anything to confirm their position. The Coyotes have zero games remaining and sit at 9-1. Two teams are 8-1 behind them in Sherwood and Walter Johnson. Sherwood does have one game remaining, but it is not in-conference. They will take on Governor Thomas Johnson. For Walter Johnson, they take on Montgomery Blair with hopes of getting one last victory on the season.
One other game to watch is Einstein vs. Richard Montgomery. The Rockets are fighting for a potential top 5 spot, while the Titans are trying to stay in the top twelve.
